Most racking companies will sell you steel. Fewer will walk your floor the way an inspector would and tell you what’s already installed that would get flagged. Here are the four things that come up again and again, and how to fix them before they’re a problem.
Nobody misses a rack that's visibly bent in half. What gets missed is the column with a 1/4-inch bow nobody noticed because the load still sits level. A dented upright fails at capacity, under load it was never rerated for. An inspector is looking for the small deformation that means the rack's rated capacity isn't what the sticker says anymore.
Ask most warehouse operators for the load capacity rating on their existing rack and the manufacturer spec sheet, and you'll get a pause. Racking gets bought, installed, and the documentation disappears into whoever set it up originally. No rating on file means every safety conversation starts from a guess instead of a number.
Rack that isn't properly anchored to the slab doesn't fail under normal use. It fails when something hits it — a forklift, a shifted load, a hard stop. Anchor bolts torqued wrong, missing entirely, or anchored into a slab that wasn't rated for it are some of the most common findings, and the least visible from a normal walkthrough.
Beams that aren't pinned or locked into the upright connectors can walk loose over time from vibration and forklift contact. Inexpensive to fix, and one of the most frequent findings on any real inspection — because it's invisible until a beam actually shifts.
